Applications and Functions of PolyDADMAC
PolyDADMAC (polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride) is a water-soluble, strongly cationic polymer widely used as an organic coagulant, flocculation aid, turbidity remover, color-removal agent, sludge conditioner, and charge-neutralization chemical. Unlike anionic polyacrylamide (APAM), which is mainly used to bridge particles, PolyDADMAC has a strong permanent positive charge that makes it particularly effective for neutralizing negatively charged colloids and suspended particles.
PolyDADMAC is available in different molecular weights, charge densities, viscosities and solid contents. Consequently, different grades are designed for different applications. It can be supplied as a liquid polymer and is commonly used either alone or together with PAC, aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, polyamine, or polyacrylamide.
1. Main Function of PolyDADMAC
The most important function of PolyDADMAC is charge neutralization.

The optimum sequence depends on wastewater chemistry and should be determined through jar testing.
12. PolyDADMAC vs. Polyamine
PolyDADMAC is sometimes confused with polyamine, but they are chemically different cationic polymers.
PolyDADMAC is based on diallyldimethylammonium chloride and contains permanent quaternary ammonium groups.
Polyamine generally refers to a different family of cationic amine-containing polymers.
Both can perform charge neutralization, but their molecular weight, charge density, viscosity and treatment performance can differ significantly.
Therefore, when replacing a PolyDADMAC product with polyamine—or vice versa—the comparison should include:

- Charge density
- Molecular weight
- Viscosity
