Application of Polyamine FL2250 and FL2449
Polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 are high-performance cationic polyamine coagulants widely used in water and wastewater treatment, sludge conditioning, and industrial process water applications. As members of the polyamine family, these products are characterized by high charge density, rapid reaction kinetics, and excellent compatibility with other treatment chemicals, making them effective primary coagulants or coagulant aids in demanding treatment environments.
Although FL2250 and FL2449 share the same fundamental chemistry, they differ in charge density, molecular structure, and application positioning, allowing operators to select the most suitable product based on raw water quality, pollutant load, and process configuration.
1. Coagulation Mechanism and Functional Role
The primary function of polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 is charge neutralization. Most suspended solids, colloidal particles, organic matter, and emulsified oils in water systems possess a negative surface charge, which keeps them dispersed and resistant to aggregation.
Polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 contain a high concentration of positively charged amine groups, enabling rapid neutralization of these negative charges. Once destabilized, particles collide to form microflocs, which can then be removed efficiently through sedimentation, dissolved air flotation (DAF), filtration, or secondary flocculation using polyacrylamide polymers.
2. Municipal Drinking Water Treatment
One of the key applications of polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 is municipal drinking water treatment. Surface water sources such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs often contain clay, silt, algae, microorganisms, and natural organic matter, all of which contribute to turbidity and color.
Polyamine FL2250 is typically used in small to medium-sized water treatment plants, where stable performance, easy dosing, and operational flexibility are important. Its balanced charge density allows effective turbidity removal without overdosing risks.
Polyamine FL2449, with its higher charge density, is more suitable for high-turbidity or high-organic raw water and for large municipal treatment facilities. It provides faster coagulation, improved floc formation, and reduced dependence on inorganic coagulants such as alum or ferric chloride. Both products help reduce sludge volume and minimize residual metal content in treated drinking water.
3. Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 are extensively applied in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment as primary coagulants or coagulant aids. Wastewater streams commonly contain suspended solids, colloidal organics, fats, oils, greases (FOG), and surfactants, all of which interfere with clarification and biological treatment.
FL2250 is well suited for variable wastewater conditions, where stable and controllable coagulation is required. It improves primary clarification efficiency, reduces turbidity and suspended solids, and protects downstream biological systems.
FL2449 is preferred in high-strength industrial wastewater, such as effluents from oil and gas, petrochemical, textile, food processing, and chemical manufacturing industries. Its higher charge density enables effective emulsion breaking and significant reduction of COD and turbidity with relatively low dosage.
4. Sludge Conditioning and Dewatering Enhancement
Another important application of polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 is sludge conditioning prior to mechanical dewatering. Sludge particles typically exhibit strong negative charges that hinder water release and floc formation.
When used as pre-coagulants, FL2250 and FL2449 neutralize surface charges and prepare the sludge for efficient flocculation with cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM). This pretreatment improves floc strength and structure, resulting in lower polymer consumption, improved filtrate clarity, and higher cake solids.
FL2250 is commonly applied in belt presses and centrifuges handling municipal sludge, while FL2449 is particularly effective for high-solids, oily, or industrial sludge where stronger charge neutralization is required.
5. Industrial Process Water and Effluent Treatment
Polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 are widely used in industrial process water systems and effluent treatment plants across industries such as mining, metallurgy, pulp and paper, power generation, and electronics manufacturing.
In these systems, the products remove fine suspended solids, colloidal silica, color bodies, and organic contaminants, improving clarification and protecting downstream equipment such as membranes, filters, and heat exchangers. FL2449 is especially suitable for high-load and short-retention-time systems, including DAF units and compact clarifiers.
6. Pulp and Paper Industry Applications
In the pulp and paper industry, polyamine FL2250 and FL2449 are used as fixing agents and wet-end process chemicals. They neutralize anionic trash generated from recycled fiber, enhance fines and filler retention, improve drainage, and stabilize wet-end chemistry.
FL2250 is typically applied in standard papermaking systems, while FL2449 is favored in high-speed machines and high-recycled-fiber operations, where anionic demand is significantly higher.
