Application of Polyamine MozoFloc 4102 and MozoFloc 4114
1. Introduction to MozoFloc™ Polyamine Series
MozoFloc 4102 and MozoFloc 4114 are liquid cationic polyamine coagulants supplied by Univar Solutions for use in municipal water treatment, municipal wastewater treatment, and a wide range of industrial effluent clarification processes. These products belong to the polyamine polymer family, which is characterized by high positive charge density, low to medium molecular weight, and rapid charge neutralization performance.
Unlike high-molecular-weight flocculants such as polyacrylamide, MozoFloc™ polyamines function primarily as coagulants. Their main mechanism is the destabilization of negatively charged colloids, suspended solids, emulsified oils, and organic matter. MozoFloc™ 4102 and MozoFloc™ 4114 are formulated with different charge levels and performance profiles, allowing operators to select the most suitable grade based on influent quality and treatment objectives.
2. Municipal Drinking Water Treatment Applications
2.1 Raw Water Coagulation and Clarification
MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 are widely used in drinking water treatment plants for the clarification of surface water, river water, and reservoir water. Raw water typically contains clay, silt, algae, and natural organic matter that carry negative surface charges, making them stable in suspension.
When dosed into the rapid-mix zone, MozoFloc™ polyamines neutralize these charges almost instantly, promoting particle collision and micro-floc formation. This improves sedimentation efficiency and enhances downstream filtration performance.
-
MozoFloc™ 4102 is commonly applied in low to medium turbidity conditions, where controlled coagulation and stable performance are required.
-
MozoFloc™ 4114, with relatively higher charge strength, is better suited for higher turbidity or higher organic load waters, including seasonal runoff events.
2.2 Coagulant Aid for Inorganic Salts
MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 are frequently used as coagulant aids in combination with aluminum sulfate or ferric chloride. Their use allows significant reduction in inorganic coagulant dosage, resulting in:
-
Lower sludge volume
-
Reduced residual aluminum or iron in treated water
-
Improved filter run times
-
Reduced chemical handling and disposal costs
Because polyamines are effective across a broad pH range, they also reduce the need for pH correction chemicals.
3. Municipal Wastewater Treatment Applications
3.1 Primary Clarification Enhancement
In municipal wastewater treatment facilities, MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 are applied in primary clarifiers to improve the removal of suspended solids, fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Domestic wastewater often contains finely dispersed solids and emulsified oils that do not settle efficiently without chemical assistance.
MozoFloc™ polyamines destabilize these particles, resulting in larger flocs and faster settling rates. Improved primary clarification reduces organic loading to biological treatment units, enhancing overall plant stability and efficiency.
MozoFloc™ 4114 is often preferred for high-strength influent, while MozoFloc™ 4102 is suitable for more consistent wastewater conditions.
3.2 Sludge Conditioning and Thickening
MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 are also used as sludge conditioning agents prior to gravity thickening or mechanical dewatering processes such as centrifuges, belt presses, and filter presses. By neutralizing the negative surface charge of sludge particles, these polyamines promote aggregation and improve free water release.
They are commonly applied as a pretreatment step before cationic polyacrylamide flocculants, enabling reduced overall polymer consumption and improved sludge cake dryness.
4. Industrial Wastewater Treatment Applications
4.1 Paper and Pulp Industry
Paper and pulp mill effluent contains fibers, fillers, inks, and dissolved organic substances. MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 are highly effective in this industry due to their strong cationic nature.
Applications include:
-
Improved fiber and filler recovery
-
Reduced suspended solids
-
Enhanced performance of clarifiers and dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems
-
Lower turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in treated effluent
MozoFloc™ 4114 is particularly effective for recycled paper mills and coated paper operations with higher contaminant loads.
4.2 Textile and Dyeing Wastewater
Textile effluents often contain negatively charged dyes and surfactants that contribute to high color and COD levels. MozoFloc™ polyamines neutralize dye molecules, promoting aggregation and efficient color removal through sedimentation or flotation.
MozoFloc™ 4114 is commonly selected for high-color wastewater, while MozoFloc™ 4102 is suitable for moderate dye concentrations.
4.3 Food and Beverage Industry
In food processing industries such as breweries, dairies, and meat processing plants, wastewater contains proteins, fats, oils, and suspended solids. MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 destabilize emulsified oils and organic matter, improving oil–water separation and reducing COD before biological treatment.
5. Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Wastewater
MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 are used in the treatment of oily wastewater from refineries, petrochemical plants, and oilfield operations. They assist in breaking stable oil emulsions and removing dispersed oil droplets, improving the efficiency of API separators, flotation units, and secondary clarifiers. MozoFloc™ 4114 is particularly suitable for complex or high-oil emulsions.
6. Operational Advantages
Key operational benefits of MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 include:
-
Rapid coagulation and short mixing time
-
Broad pH adaptability
-
Lower sludge production than inorganic coagulants
-
Improved downstream dewatering performance
-
Easy handling and dosing as liquid products
7. Conclusion
MozoFloc™ 4102 and MozoFloc™ 4114 are versatile and high-performance cationic polyamine coagulants widely applied in municipal drinking water treatment, municipal wastewater treatment, and diverse industrial effluent systems. Through rapid charge neutralization and efficient coagulation, they improve clarification efficiency, reduce chemical consumption, and enhance operational stability. Proper selection between MozoFloc™ 4102 and 4114 allows operators to achieve reliable, economical, and environmentally compliant water treatment performance under varying process conditions.
