Polyacrylamide / nonionic polyacrylamide alcomer 80 can be replaced by Chinafloc N0310

Nonionic polyacrylamide, particularly the grade known as Alcomer 80, is a water-soluble polymer that has found wide application in various industries. Unlike cationic or anionic polyacrylamides, which carry strong positive or negative charges, nonionic polyacrylamides are either uncharged or only very weakly ionized. This unique property gives Alcomer 80 a distinct place in water treatment, mining, papermaking, and other industrial processes where charge neutrality and versatile performance are required. Because it does not depend heavily on electrostatic interactions, nonionic polyacrylamide like Alcomer 80 is especially effective in situations involving high levels of dissolved salts, fluctuating pH, or mixed suspensions of organic and inorganic particles.
The primary function of Alcomer 80 is to act as a flocculant, thickener, stabilizer, or binder depending on the process in which it is used. By bridging between fine particles and encouraging them to form larger, more settleable flocs, it dramatically improves solid–liquid separation efficiency. Its flexibility allows it to be applied in wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering, industrial effluent clarification, mineral processing, soil conditioning, and even specialty formulations such as adhesives or construction materials.
Municipal Wastewater Treatment
One of the most important applications of nonionic polyacrylamide Alcomer 80 is in municipal wastewater treatment plants. Unlike cationic polymers, which are usually dosed to sludge containing mostly organic matter, or anionic polymers, which are chosen for mineral-rich suspensions, nonionic polymers like Alcomer 80 are suitable for mixed sludge types or for conditions where the feed varies widely in composition.
In primary clarification, Alcomer 80 assists in removing suspended solids and organic contaminants by promoting floc formation that settles quickly in clarifiers. In biological treatment stages, it helps stabilize the activated sludge process by improving settling characteristics. In sludge dewatering operations, when sludge is particularly difficult due to high oil, grease, or mixed industrial discharges, Alcomer 80 is added to enhance cake dryness in centrifuges, belt presses, and filter presses. Its neutral character makes it less sensitive to changing sludge conditions compared to strongly charged polymers.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Alcomer 80 is also widely used across industrial wastewater treatment applications. Many industries produce effluents that contain suspended solids, oil-in-water emulsions, or fine organic matter. In such contexts, nonionic polyacrylamide is selected when anionic or cationic products are less effective, particularly in effluents containing both types of charged particles.
-
Textile Industry: Alcomer 80 is applied to remove fine fibers, dyes, and other colloids. Since textile effluents often contain mixtures of anionic and cationic species, a neutral polymer ensures broad compatibility.
-
Food Processing: Used in treating wash waters containing starch, proteins, or oils. Alcomer 80 helps improve clarification and reduces the organic load.
-
Petrochemical Industry: In refineries and chemical plants, wastewater streams may contain oil, grease, and solids that are challenging to remove. Alcomer 80 acts as a flocculant and coagulant aid, improving separation efficiency.
-
Pharmaceutical and Chemical Manufacturing: It is useful where process effluents contain complex organics and salts, and where charge-sensitive flocculants might fail.
Mining and Mineral Processing
In the mining sector, Alcomer 80 is used as a flocculant in solid–liquid separation processes. Many mineral suspensions are naturally difficult to settle, particularly fine tailings streams from coal, iron ore, bauxite, or gold mining. Nonionic polyacrylamide works by bridging particles without relying on electrostatic attraction, which is useful in highly variable mineral slurries with high ionic strength.
It is also applied in flotation processes as a depressant or clarifier, and in tailings thickeners where rapid water recovery is critical. By producing compact, fast-settling flocs, Alcomer 80 helps reduce the volume of tailings storage, enhances water reuse in the plant, and minimizes environmental impact.
Papermaking and Pulp Processing
In the pulp and paper industry, Alcomer 80 functions as a retention aid, drainage aid, and dry-strength additive.
-
Retention Aid: Fine fibers and fillers like clay and calcium carbonate can pass through the paper machine wire unless stabilized. Nonionic polyacrylamide captures these fines and keeps them within the fiber mat, improving product quality and reducing raw material loss.
-
Drainage Aid: By flocculating fines, Alcomer 80 increases water drainage from the paper sheet, improving machine speed and energy efficiency.
-
Dry-Strength Resin: When added to the fiber slurry, it enhances bonding between fibers, thereby increasing the tensile strength, burst strength, and folding endurance of the final paper.
Soil Conditioning and Agriculture
In agriculture and environmental engineering, Alcomer 80 has been used as a soil conditioner and erosion control agent. Because it increases soil aggregate stability, it helps reduce erosion, improves water infiltration, and minimizes surface runoff. In arid or semi-arid regions, nonionic polyacrylamide can enhance soil moisture retention, benefiting crop yields. It is also applied in irrigation channels to minimize sediment transport.
Oilfield Applications
Nonionic polyacrylamide Alcomer 80 also finds uses in oil and gas operations. It serves as a rheology modifier, mobility control agent, and stabilizer in drilling fluids and enhanced oil recovery processes. In drilling muds, it improves cuttings transport and stabilizes boreholes. In polymer flooding for tertiary oil recovery, its viscosity-modifying property improves sweep efficiency, thereby enhancing hydrocarbon recovery.
Other Specialty Applications
-
Construction Industry: Alcomer 80 is added to cement, gypsum, or mortar formulations as a thickener, binder, or water retention aid.
-
Cosmetics and Personal Care: In some cases, nonionic polyacrylamide derivatives are included in formulations as stabilizers or viscosity modifiers.
-
Adhesives and Coatings: It acts as a binder or rheology modifier, giving desired performance in specialty applications.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
The application of Alcomer 80 offers both environmental and operational advantages. By enhancing solid–liquid separation, it reduces pollutant loads discharged into water bodies. Improved sludge dewatering reduces landfill disposal volume, transportation costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. In industries such as mining and paper, it enables water recycling, reducing freshwater demand. Its neutral character also allows for wide compatibility, minimizing the need for frequent chemical changes.
