Polyacrylamide / anionic polyacrylamide ZETAG 4100 DK can be replaced by Chinafloc A
ZETAG® 4100 DK is a high–molecular weight anionic polyacrylamide (A-PAM) designed for efficient solid–liquid separation in demanding industrial processes. It is widely applied in mineral processing, alumina refining, tailings management, and industrial water treatment, where fine particles, high solids loadings, and alkaline conditions make separation challenging. The primary function of ZETAG® 4100 DK is to promote rapid flocculation through polymer bridging, enabling improved settling, clarification, and dewatering performance.
1. Chemical Characteristics and Function
ZETAG® 4100 DK is characterized by its high molecular weight and moderate to high anionic charge density. These properties allow the polymer to adsorb onto positively charged or metal-oxide-rich particle surfaces and form strong inter-particle bridges. Unlike inorganic coagulants that work mainly by charge neutralization, ZETAG® 4100 DK operates primarily through polymer bridging, creating large, shear-resistant flocs that settle rapidly and release water efficiently.
The product performs reliably over a wide pH range and is especially effective in alkaline and high-ionic-strength environments, making it well suited for applications such as red mud treatment and mineral tailings thickening.
2. Application in Alumina Refining – Red Mud Separation
One of the most important applications of ZETAG® 4100 DK is in alumina refineries operating the Bayer process. During bauxite digestion, insoluble residues form fine red mud particles that are difficult to settle due to their small size and surface chemistry. ZETAG® 4100 DK is applied in primary settlers, secondary thickeners, washer thickeners, and high-solids thickeners to improve red mud separation.
When dosed into the feedwell or dilution zone, the polymer aggregates fine red mud particles into large, dense flocs. This accelerates settling rates, improves overflow clarity, and increases underflow density. As a result, liquor recovery is enhanced, soda losses are reduced, and downstream washing efficiency is improved.
3. Application in CCD Washing Circuits
In counter-current decantation (CCD) washing systems, ZETAG® 4100 DK supports efficient washing of red mud by maintaining stable thickener operation. Strong floc formation prevents fine solids from short-circuiting into the overflow, ensuring low turbidity wash liquor. Improved underflow compaction allows more effective displacement washing, maximizing recovery of caustic soda and alumina values while minimizing wash water consumption.
4. High-Solids Thickeners and Residue Disposal Preparation
ZETAG® 4100 DK is widely used in high-solids red mud thickeners prior to residue disposal. At this stage, the objective is to achieve maximum solids concentration with minimal free water. The polymer produces compressible, structured flocs that release interstitial water under compression, enabling higher underflow densities.
Dense underflow reduces slurry volume, pumping energy, and pipeline wear, while improving the stability of residue stacking or dry disposal systems. This application contributes directly to safer residue management and reduced environmental footprint.
5. Mineral Processing and Tailings Management
Beyond alumina refining, ZETAG® 4100 DK is extensively used in mineral processing operations, including copper, gold, iron ore, coal, and phosphate processing. In tailings thickeners and clarifiers, the polymer improves settling kinetics and water recovery from fine mineral slurries.
By forming large, fast-settling flocs, ZETAG® 4100 DK increases thickener throughput and produces clear overflow water suitable for recycling. Higher underflow density reduces tailings storage volume and enhances disposal stability, which is critical for modern tailings management strategies.
6. Industrial Water and Process Water Treatment
ZETAG® 4100 DK is also applied in industrial water treatment systems, where it serves as a flocculant for clarification of process water, wash water, and effluents containing suspended solids. Typical applications include cooling water clarification, process water recycling, stormwater treatment, and polishing of clarified streams.
In these systems, the polymer removes fine suspended solids, reduces turbidity, and improves water quality for reuse or discharge. It is often used in combination with coagulants such as polyamines or inorganic salts to optimize floc formation.
7. Operational Benefits
The use of ZETAG® 4100 DK provides several operational advantages:
-
Faster settling and higher thickener capacity
-
Improved overflow clarity and reduced solids carryover
-
Higher underflow density and improved dewatering
-
Stable thickener bed and reduced rake torque
-
Enhanced water recovery and reduced freshwater demand
These benefits translate into improved process stability, reduced downtime, and lower overall operating costs.
8. Environmental and Economic Impact
From an environmental perspective, ZETAG® 4100 DK supports sustainable operation by maximizing water reuse and minimizing waste volume. Improved solid–liquid separation reduces the release of fine solids into effluents and lowers the risk of environmental contamination. Economically, reduced energy consumption, lower chemical losses, and improved residue handling result in significant cost savings.
9. Conclusion
ZETAG® 4100 DK is a high-performance anionic polyacrylamide flocculant designed for demanding solid–liquid separation applications. Its effectiveness in red mud settling, CCD washing, high-solids thickening, mineral tailings management, and industrial water treatment makes it a key process chemical in modern alumina refineries and mineral processing plants. By improving settling efficiency, water recovery, and residue management, ZETAG® 4100 DK delivers substantial operational, economic, and environmental benefits.
