Application of PolyDADMAC (Polydiallyldimethylammonium Chloride)
PolyDADMAC, chemically known as polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride, is a water-soluble, strongly cationic polymer widely applied as a primary coagulant or coagulant aid in water treatment and industrial separation processes. Owing to its very high charge density, excellent solubility, and broad compatibility, PolyDADMAC has become an essential chemical in municipal water treatment, wastewater treatment, sludge conditioning, industrial effluent management, and papermaking operations.
1. Fundamental Function and Mechanism
The primary mechanism of PolyDADMAC is charge neutralization. Most suspended solids, colloidal particles, natural organic matter, bacteria, and emulsified oils present in water systems carry a negative surface charge, which keeps them dispersed and resistant to settling. PolyDADMAC contains quaternary ammonium groups along its polymer backbone, providing a permanent positive charge that rapidly neutralizes these negatively charged particles.
Once neutralized, destabilized particles aggregate into larger flocs that can be efficiently removed through sedimentation, flotation, filtration, or downstream polymer flocculation. This fast and effective mechanism explains the broad application range of PolyDADMAC across diverse industries.
2. Municipal Drinking Water Treatment
One of the most important applications of PolyDADMAC is in municipal drinking water treatment plants. Raw surface water sources typically contain clay, silt, algae, microorganisms, and natural organic matter, which cause turbidity and color. PolyDADMAC is dosed at the rapid-mix stage to destabilize colloids and initiate coagulation.
Compared with traditional inorganic coagulants such as alum or ferric chloride, PolyDADMAC offers several advantages, including lower sludge generation, reduced dependence on pH adjustment, and absence of residual metals in treated water. It is often used either as a stand-alone coagulant or as a coagulant aid to significantly reduce inorganic salt dosage while improving clarified water quality and filter performance.
3. Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment
PolyDADMAC is extensively applied in wastewater treatment, both municipal and industrial, where it serves as a primary coagulant to remove suspended solids, colloidal organics, and emulsified contaminants. Wastewater streams from domestic sewage, food processing, petrochemical operations, textile dyeing, and metal finishing often contain complex mixtures of negatively charged particles.
By neutralizing these charges, PolyDADMAC improves primary clarification efficiency, reduces turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and enhances the performance of secondary biological treatment. In industrial wastewater systems, PolyDADMAC is especially effective in breaking emulsions, removing oils and greases, and improving dissolved air flotation (DAF) performance.
4. Sludge Conditioning and Dewatering Enhancement
Another critical application of PolyDADMAC is in sludge conditioning prior to mechanical dewatering. Sludge particles typically possess strong negative charges that hinder floc formation and water release. PolyDADMAC is commonly used as a pre-coagulant to neutralize these charges before the addition of high-molecular-weight polymer flocculants.
This pretreatment improves floc size and strength, reduces polymer consumption, enhances filtrate clarity, and increases cake solids content in belt presses, centrifuges, and filter presses. PolyDADMAC is effective for a wide range of sludge types, including primary sludge, waste activated sludge, digested sludge, and industrial sludge.
5. Industrial Process Water and Effluent Treatment
PolyDADMAC plays a significant role in industrial process water systems and effluent treatment plants across numerous industries, including oil and gas, mining, chemical manufacturing, pulp and paper, food and beverage processing, and power generation. These systems often require rapid clarification and removal of fine suspended solids, color bodies, and organic contaminants.
PolyDADMAC improves clarification, flotation, and filtration processes, protects downstream membranes, and stabilizes water quality under fluctuating operating conditions. Its liquid form allows accurate dosing and easy integration into automated treatment systems.
6. Pulp and Paper Industry Applications
In the pulp and paper industry, PolyDADMAC is widely used as a fixing agent, retention aid, and wet-end chemical. Recycled fiber systems introduce large amounts of anionic trash, which interferes with retention and drainage. PolyDADMAC neutralizes these anionic substances, improving fines and filler retention, enhancing drainage, and stabilizing paper machine operation.
The use of PolyDADMAC leads to higher productivity, improved paper quality, and reduced chemical consumption in papermaking processes.
7. Operational and Economic Advantages
Across all applications, PolyDADMAC offers several key advantages:
-
Very high and permanent cationic charge density
-
Rapid action and fast coagulation kinetics
-
Wide effective pH and temperature range
-
Compatibility with inorganic coagulants and polymer flocculants
-
Liquid form for safe handling and precise dosing
These features make PolyDADMAC a cost-effective and operationally reliable solution for modern treatment systems.
