Reservoir drive comes from a number of natural mechanisms during primary recovery stage. Natural underground pressure and gravity drainage will be able to force the movement of the oil within the reservoir towards where the wells are located. Recovery factor is typically 5-15% from primary recovery.
Along the lifetime of the well, the underground pressure will fall and at some point will not be sufficient enough to force the oil to the surface, secondary recovery methods are applied at this stage. Common secondary recovery technics are: Water injection, gas injection, gas lift etc. Typical recovery factor from store water flooding is about 20-30% depends on the properties of the reservoir rocks and oil.
ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY
Also known as Tertiary recovery, which increases the mobility of oil in order to increase extraction. Typical methods are: Thermal, Steam injection for heavy oil; Polymer floods, surfactants, carbon dioxide flooding, Microbial treatment etc. Those technics are in place when secondary recovery is not enough which extra 10-20% of oil can be recovered.
