Coal dewatering

Coal preparation plants usually undergo a series of operations, including washing, screening, sedimentation, floatation and dewatering. The complete process entails large volumes of water that is recycled with various solids content.
 

Clarification of this water is typically performed by a thickener with the use of coagulants and flocculants. The objective of this thickener is to recover clean, low-turbidity water from the tailings. Clean water is vital for the efficiency of the entire process.

One component of this potential damage is through contamination of water. Inorganic components are mobilized through various mining processes including vaporization (smelting, autoclave, etc.) or solubilization (process water or natural waters leading to mineral dissolution).

Major inorganic contaminants are generally classified as either metallic (Hg, Cd, Cu, etc.) or oxyanionic (negatively charged inorganic compounds with various degrees of oxidation, e.g. SOx, POx, SeOx, AsOx, etc.).

Arsenic and selenium are among the list of oxyanionic contaminants of substantial concern due to their toxicity and potential to bioaccumulate. The US Government agencies continue to issue legislation and recommendations to lower allowable levels for selenium discharge into the environment. This has led to tighter restrictions on discharge permits.
